A world you like. With a climate you like is getting ready for the launch of a EU-wide low-carbon contest, starting on 6 February 2013. Across Europe, we are looking for the most innovative and creative green projects that are making a difference in tackling climate change.
What is this all about?
It is time to move away from just talking about climate action and show that concrete action is feasible, affordable – and already happening.
Across Europe, there are many good initiatives on the ground contributing to a world we like, with a climate we like. It is time to reward them.
The World You Like Challenge will be launched by Connie Hedegaard, European Commissioner for Climate Action, on 6 February 2013. We want creative and innovative minds across the EU to let us know about their initiatives that are making a real contribution to the drive towards a sustainable, low-carbon future.
Who can participate?
However big or small, any project that is helping to lower or avoid CO2 emissions and improve people’s quality of life can be submitted. Entries are welcome from individuals, entrepreneurs, businesses, public and private organisations - in fact, from anyone with good ideas! For more specific application criteria, please refer to our conditions of participation.
What are the project criteria?
We are looking forward to receiving entries about original and innovative projects with a concrete and tangible output. What matters is that the project contributes to avoiding, reducing or dealing with carbon emissions – on a technical or behavioural level. Your project should illustrate good practice and provide a role model for other people or organisations. If it has an impact on people’s everyday life, even better – that is what we are looking for! You can submit your project in one of the following five categories:
Above all, we are looking for inspirational projects that show others how a world we like, with a climate we like, can be achieved and that can motivate people to adopt a low-carbon lifestyle.
!
Where and when can I submit my project?
The contest starts on 6 February and will be open for submissions for three months. You can submit your project via our online form and showcase it using text, photos or videos on our website. After a short period of validation, your
project will be posted online and become part of the virtual world you like on the campaign website. You will receive an automatic email confirmation once your project is published. An online map will show the location of all projects submitted. Moreover, each project will be showcased on an individual page to introduce it to the public.
How can I win and what’s in for me?
After the three months submission phase, visitors to the campaign website will be able to vote for the most creative and inspirational initiative to create a world we like. From the ten most popular projects, a jury will select three winners. The three winners will be invited to the Sustainia – World you like award ceremony in Copenhagen.
The campaign has a special focus on five countries – Bulgaria, Italy, Lithuania, Poland and Portugal. In each of these countries we will also select five winners who will see their projects featured in a national billboard campaign in autumn 2013.
Background
The contest is a part of the campaign A world you like. With a climate you like. The campaign was launched in October 2012 and will run until the end of 2013. It aims to showcase existing cost-efficient solutions, which could contribute to meeting the EU's objective of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 80-95% by 2050.
A world you like. With a climate you like is a follow-up to the Commission's "Roadmap for moving to a competitive low-carbon economy in 2050" from March 2011. This communication sets out pathways for significant yet cost-effective emission reductions by the main economic sectors. The Roadmap shows that building a low-carbon economy will increase investments in clean technologies and infrastructure such as smart electricity grids, and will drastically lower import bills for oil and gas.
