National grid failures in USA and Canada prompt the analysis of power security in Poland

A sequence of power failures in the USA, on the 14th August 2003, is described. With reference to the Polish national grid it is stated among other things that it is poorly developed and its connections with the 110 kV system cause various technical, economic and ownership problems. Considerable circular flows are noticeable. Market energy prices do not encourage investment in new power capacity, and the development strategy for electric power engineering does not include mechanisms which stimulate such investment.

Pressure waves in gas flow

In the Energetyka we can encounter the phenomenon of gas flow in installations which are equipped with devices for changing energy flux, pressure or conductor cross section. Operation of such devices always creates pressure compression and dilution waves, which are propagated in the installation. The article includes an original approach to the essential theory concerning pressure waves, as well as calculation examples.

Classic measuring methods for short-circuit loop impedance in the grid with working loads

The working loads of the grid may cause big errors in the measurements of short-circuit loop impedance. Such errors may cause different evaluations, as far as the fulfilment of self trip out in the grid where neutral earthing is concerned. Modification of the classic measurement method is proposed, which enables the elimination of the influence of grid working loads on the measurement results.

There is a description of the wattles energy consumption measuring method used in the country and the method of the energy settlement with consumers. Disadvantages of the method are presented. The meter for direct measurement of over optimal wattless energy consumption is characterized. The economic and technical results of the meter application are given on the basis of collected measurement results. The conclusions are presented.

Small-cycle thermal fatigue of pipe structures

The mechanism of small-cycle thermal fatigue of 16M steel is presented. It is stated that cyclical thermal tensions occurring during temperature changes within the range of 20-400°C, with simultaneous limitations on thermal deformations, cause damage resulting from thermal - mechanical fatigue in the "finned pipe" structures. De-cohesion is initially carried out according to the fatigue mechanisms, next it goes through the stage of micro slots combination, caused by shearing in the metallic matrix, and then it is activated by a creeping processes.

Information has become the most profitable commodity in the 20th century. The role of information has been acknowledged for a long time in the electric Energetyka as essential in modern electric power production, transmission and the distribution processes. CIRE is the leading internet portal in the Polish power industry. In September 2003 CIRE was honoured with the Prize of the Wrocław President and received 2 nominations in the Hugony competition (prizes of the VIth Lower Silesian Festival of Science).

The conditions influencing the creation of sediments on the internal surface of the boiler pipes: Limit sediment volume in these pipes is defined, below which operation of the boiler is possible. Marking methods and sediment volume evaluation methods are suggested in order to make a decision concerning chemical pipe cleaning.

There is a presentation of work results concerning the solidification technology for sediments from municipal sewage treatment plants. Applied sediment granulation and stabilization processes are described. Charac-teristics of obtained granulated products and stabilizers are given. These products can be utilized as fertilizers in agriculture and for land reclamation.

Generating earth and touch tensions by earth fault currents in extensive earth systems of high voltage stations

The influence of the place of occurrence of earth faults on earth tensions and touch tensions is shown. There is a description of the generation of such tensions by the currents outflowing from earth systems to the star points of transformers (autotransformers) situated outside an object, as well as by the currents closing within an object. Examples of the measurements carried out in 3 objects 400 and 220 kV are presented.

Propagation of currents into parallel groups in multicurrent winding of special transformers

There is a general presentation (relative units) of the calculation results obtained for 3 different model units, with geometry similar in there proportions to practical solutions. Presented results may be used as an indicator, for a designer at the initial stage of transformer designing. It does not mean that a designer does not have to carry out proper computer calculations for a specific solution and evaluate the thermal, short-cut and power (load loss) effects, caused by non-uniform propagation of currents into parallel groups. Considerations concerning these results are limited to axial short-cut forces and short-cut tension.

Energy saving power supply of electro-filters

It is justifiable to introduce an energy-saving power supply with an electro-filter of high dust collecting efficiency, where there is No. danger of exceeding allowable dust emissions. In particular, 4-zone electro-filters are suitable for such solutions. Economic calculation should decide whether it is reasonable to apply the system for a chosen electro-filter. Energy saving power supply, due to changeable operating conditions, should be automatically controlled with the constant control of an electro-filter operation.

In July 2003 the Coal Recovery Plant of Rybnik SA - ZOWER Power Plant started its operation. The annual production of the Plant will amount to 150 thousand tons of coal. Coal will be recovered from the mine waste dump of the former Dębieńsko Mine. Rybnik S.A. Power Plant has created favourable economic conditions for the project and received support from the local authorities. In 2002/2003 the Rybnik SA Power Plant (member of EdF Group) took part in the competition "Trophies of Sustainable Development". One of the prizes in the category "Solidarity for the future: environment" was granted for the ZOWER project.
